World’s Largest Ukulele Lesson!

This event was part of the Old Town School of Folk Music’s first annual Festival of Aloha – four days chock full of concerts and workshops centered around the music of Hawaii and the Pacific islands. Nice to see such a large turnout of Chicagoans of all types interested in Hawaiian culture. Ironically enough, I never fully appreciated this while growing up in Hawaii as much as I do now, and possibly wouldn’t have rediscovered without the help of the growing local uke community. And of course the magical institution that is the Old Town School.

Hundreds of people gathered in Welles Park in an attempt to break the Guinness World Record for the world’s largest ukulele lesson. I believe 1,327 was the number to reach – finally tally was only 530, but it was still a lot of fun. It’s one instrument that sounds both beautiful and adorable when played by hundreds of people simultaneously 🙂

I also recorded it from my perspective, which can be seen here.
